About Royal Oak House

The inviting parlour of Royal Oak House

A word about our origins:
Over the years, and quite by accident, biking all over Maryland’s Eastern Shore, usually aiming for the Bellevue ferry dock, we found the village of Royal Oak. Even then, I remember feeling an odd premonition—we both did, Carol and I. We agreed on the “vibes” of the little crossroads there, anchored by antiques shops, an original country store, post office and little more. That was almost twenty years ago. Much later, we fell hard for it at a crossroads in our own lives, and decided against all good judgment to restore this Victorian parsonage, listing from fifty years of “deferred” maintenance,” and to fashion from it our own bed and breakfast. That’s Royal Oak House.
The owner-innkeepers
Carol Rizzoli defected from a career as a book editor and journalist to co-own Royal Oak House and to write. She is finishing a book about the mishaps and pleasures of opening our bed and breakfast, titled White House Yellow Fields.
Hugo Rizzoli owned The Bookstall in Potomac, Maryland for twenty years and then trained as a chef before starting a catering business and bringing his skills to the new B&B venture. But he didn’t get to do any cooking until he renovated the house and built a kitchen.
